    The Lane Not Taken

    Courtesy of Swim2Win4Life: This poem is inspired by and based off of Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Not Taken, with a swimming twist added to it.

    Two lanes diverged by a blue lane line,
    And sorry I could not train in both,
    And be one swimmer, I took my time
    To study each workout and choose mine
    The easy one wouldn’t help my growth;

    Then looked at the hard one, not much craved
    And perhaps being the better choice,
    Because it was empty, wanting waves;
    This decision would be truly brave
    Said in my head by a tiny voice,

    And both that morning equally lay
    Smooth water no stroke had trodden blue.
    I could train easy another day!
    Knowing the hard one was the right way,
    I chose it as the one I would do.

    I have set my expectations high
    After hearing my own conference:
    Two lanes diverged in a pool, and I—
    Took the one that was less trained in by,
    And that has made all the difference.
